The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with an Anfield exit over the past few months and Spurs have quickly emerged as the frontrunners to sign him amid their pursuit of additional attacking reinforcements ahead of Roberto De Zerbi’s first full season in charge.

The north London side have already spent €267 million on six new players so far this summer - Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andrew Roberton, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka - and Gakpo is their latest target.

The Dutch winger has been on Spurs’ radar for a while and following lengthy talks, Voetbal International report that Gakpo has reached an agreement in principle on personal terms to join Tottenham.

It’s claimed that an official offer has not yet been lodged to Liverpool, but Spurs are expected to ramp up talks with Andoni Iraola’s side after receiving the green light from Gakpo to finalise a deal.

Rumours speculate that a fee of €70m will be required to agree a deal with Liverpool, despite the fact Gakpo’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at just €54m.

The former PSV attacker only scored nine goals in 52 games for Liverpool last season, and the arrival of Victor Munoz has already threatened his starting XI place at Anfield, while Reds are also keen to sign Bradley Barcola before Deadline Day on 1 September.

Liverpool to sell Cody Gakpo?

Tottenham are also in talks over a deal for Manchester City winger Savinho and it remains to be seen if this will impact their bid to sign Gakpo, who still has four years remaining on his current contract at Liverpool, having signed an extension last August.

It’s believed that Liverpool are willing to offload Gakpo on a permanent deal in order to raise funds for their pursuit of Barcola, although they are unlikely to sell the Dutchman unless they are informed that a deal for the PSG winger is officially on.

Tottenham boss De Zerbi is understood to be driving the club’s pursuit of Gakpo, with the 27-year-old likely to play a prominent role in north London next term if they reach an agreement with Liverpool.
