Chelsea’s latest transfer has seen Valentin Barco hook up with Xabi Alonso’s men in a deal that may well signal the end for Enzo Fernandez at Stamford Bridge.
Barco arrives to provide competition in the centre of the park, but the former Strasbourg midfielder, who has joined the Blues in a deal worth €40 million, has all the attributes to replace his compatriot at Stamford Bridge.
A feisty midfield presence, the 22-year-old became infamous in England during the World Cup after a spat with Jude Bellingham when an unused substitute for Argentina, and the energy and passion that enraged the Three Lions will see him become as a fan favourite in West London.

Why Barco will be an Enzo upgrade for Chelsea
Barco might only have made six Premier League appearances during a stint with Brighton, but he is a force not to be underestimated – and he has former Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior to thank for it.
It was, after all, Rosenior who transformed Barco from a left-back into a central midfielder, where his talents have flourished.
His statistics playing for Strasbourg show what Chelsea fans should expect of him going forward. He does everything Enzo Fernandez does, but more.
The exception is half-space receptions, which may be a point of concern for Alonso as he seeks ways in which Chelsea can construct attacks from their defence.
In Barco, though, the former Real Madrid manager has a player who data analytics firm SciSports believes will become better than Enzo in time given the correct environment.
Expert opinion: Enzo and Palmer have proven to be incompatible
Chelsea expert Cameron Smith believes that Alonso will provide the type of atmosphere to get the best out of Barco – and says that Enzo’s best days at Chelsea may already be behind him.
“Enzo Fernandez has undoubtedly been one of Chelsea’s best players since his arrival from Benfica in January 2022, but there is a mounting pile of evidence to suggest that he isn’t particularly well-suited to playing in a midfield trio alongside Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo,” he says.
“Fernandez’s best period of form in a Chelsea shirt came during Palmer’s absence through injury last season, and while it’s one of the best midfields in world football on paper, the chemistry just doesn’t seem to work.
“So, with Palmer and Caicedo part of the ‘untouchables’ group at Stamford Bridge, it’s logical that Fernandez will be the one sacrificed, despite his immense form over the past 18 months.
“Whether Barco is the player capable of stepping into his shoes is currently unknown, with his lack of height likely to be an issue alongside Caicedo and Palmer, but Alonso may be tempted to eventually faze Fernandez out in order to give the ex-Strasbourg star a consistent run in the team.”
Real Madrid move unlocked
Enzo’s open flirting with Real Madrid in the springtime has shown that he is unsettled, and the arrival of Barco is further evidence that the former Benfica player will, sooner or later, leave Stamford Bridge.
Los Blancos may be pursuing other interests currently – notably a club-record deal for Yan Diomande – but this deal is the latest proof that Fernandez’s departure is simply a matter of time.
