Coventry City boss Frank Lampard is reportedly interested in signing Chelsea starlet Josh Acheampong on loan for the 2026-27 season.

The Sky Blues are preparing for their first campaign in the Premier League in 26 years and they have already spent €107.7 million on new signings so far this summer, with Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda, Gustavo Hamer and Frank Onyeka all arriving at the CBS Arena.

However, they remain eager to add further reinforcements before Transfer Deadline Day on 1 September and they have been linked with a number of high-profile players across Europe, including Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who has been cleared to play following a doping ban.

In addition, they have also earmarked fellow Chelsea star Acheampong as a potential target, according to talkSPORT.

The England U21 international is one of several players who have been labelled “untouchable” by the Chelsea hierarchy - alongside the likes of Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill - but he has been heavily linked with a loan move throughout the summer and it’s reported that a temporary exit could be on the cards.

Acheampong made 30 appearances across all competitions last season, but he only started eight Premier League matches and with no European football this term, his potential game time has been called into question.

Crystal Palace were linked with a loan approach following Chelsea’s signing of Maxence Lacroix, while Coventry have now firmly joined the race to sign the 20-year-old, with Lampard himself reportedly driving their pursuit of his signature.

Josh Acheampong to Coventry?

Chelsea have already sold Trevoh Chalobah to Como this summer and they have reached an agreement to send Benoit Badiashile on loan to Napoli, with an option to buy next year. Axel Disasi is expected to depart on a permanent deal before Deadline Day, while the Blues are set to finalise loan deals for Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino.

As a result, it remains to be seen if Acheampong will be permitted to depart by the Chelsea hierarchy, and a loan move will almost certainly be ruled out if Malo Gusto departs amid rumoured interest from multiple top European clubs.

However, Coventry remain hopeful of finalising a deal for the England youngster, who is regarded as a top prospect by the Chelsea hierarchy and still has three years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge.

Acheampong’s long-term future at Chelsea has been questioned on multiple occasions throughout the past few years and it has been rumoured that he could be open to leaving the club on loan this season if Alonso is unable to make assurances over playing time.
