Chelsea wonderkid Jesse Derry was mobbed at Lisbon airport on Thursday evening ahead of his imminent loan move to Portuguese giants Sporting CP.

The England U19 international has signed a new six-year contract at Chelsea following an eye-catching debut campaign at the club, and he will spend the 2026-27 season on loan at Sporting in order to gain valuable first-team experience.

Derry made three senior appearances for Chelsea last term, including a first ever Premier League start versus Nottingham Forest, while he was one of the club’s most impressive performers at academy level, registering 14 goal contributions in 25 games across the UEFA Youth League and the Premier League 2.

The 19-year-old had been tipped for a potential first-team role under new boss Xabi Alonso this season, with Chelsea willing to accept offers for Alejandro Garnacho, but a full agreement has been reached for him to join Sporting on a one-year loan deal instead.

Derry travelled to Lisbon to undergo a medical on Thursday, and he was mobbed by fans and journalists upon his arrival. He will become the first player to join Sporting from Chelsea in history when the move is officially announced, and the teenager is set for a season in the spotlight, which is something he has never experienced before.

Derry signed a contract extension at Chelsea on Wednesday and his move to Sporting is likely to be finalised before the start of next week, with the Englishman ready to join his new team-mates ahead of pre-season.

Speaking after confirmation of his new deal at Chelsea, valid until 2032, Derry admitted: “It’s a dream come true to commit my future to such a big club like Chelsea. I’m just so excited for what’s to come.

“This last 12 months, I feel like a completely different player than when I first joined and that’s credit to all the coaches I’ve worked with. They've played such a big part in helping me get better.

“Just having that little snippet of playing for the first team last season, I couldn't have thought of anywhere else I'd want to be for my future. It was a no-brainer.”

Analysis: Is Sporting loan a good move for Jesse Derry?

Sporting are one of the biggest clubs in Portugal and they are expected to fight for the league title next season. They will also compete in the Champions League.

For Derry, this will be a huge step up from academy football and he will suddenly be forced to deal with the pressure of playing for a massive club. How he adjusts to this will be a useful indicator of whether he will have a career at Chelsea once he returns.

However, the potential issue with the loan move is the game time he will receive. Sporting and Chelsea are understood to have a positive relationship, and guarantees over regular involvement may therefore have been made. But, there’s still a risk that Derry could find himself on the sidelines and his development would be hugely impacted if that is the case.

Despite this, he showed immense promise during his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest and he is certainly ready to play senior football next season. So, the move could prove to be a masterstroke, but only if he becomes a regular at Sporting.
