Luka Vuskovic sends clear Chelsea message: 'After this season...'
Tottenham wonderkid Luka Vuskovic has spoken about his future beyond his current loan spell at Hamburger SV amid interest from Chelsea and various other clubs.
The Croatia international is set to be one of the most in-demand players in the transfer market this summer. Vuskovic has been a revelation in the Bundesliga this season, starring for promoted Hamburg as they have mostly avoided being dragged into a relegation battle.
The 19-year-old's exceptional performances have earned him lavish praise from all quarters. Ivan Rakitic has urged Bayern Munich to sign him, while Lothar Matthaus has described him as playing like "someone who has been to three World Cups."
The teenager previously suggested that he would be keen to stay at HSV for another season in order to play with his brother Mario, who has been banned since 2022 for failing a drug test. The elder Vuskovic will be eligible to play again in November.
However, HSV acknowledge that this seems like an almost impossible undertaking. Vuskovic's stock has quite simply risen too much for them to be able to offer anything beyond an emotional connection - albeit an incredibly strong one.
Vuskovic sends clear message
As a result, it has been widely believed that the centre-back could be set for bigger and better things outside of Hamburg - and North London. With parent club Spurs at risk of dropping down to the Championship, it has been suggested that he would not stay.
However, Tottenham ultimately hold all the cards. Vuskovic still has a contract until 2030 and, despite their struggles, they remain one of the biggest and richest clubs in the world. Prising him away from them will be eminently difficult.
Indeed, Vuskovic seems to agree, too. When asked by FAZ about his future, the youngster simply pointed to his long-term contract at Spurs. "After this season, I’ll be a Tottenham player again," he said. "I have a contract there until 2030."
While this is far from a clear commitment to the struggling giants, it does illustrate that it is not guaranteed that Vuskovic will be allowed to leave the club permanently.
This comes as a big blow to his suitors, chief among them Barcelona, Chelsea and Liverpool. All of them would be well-advised to make a move for the Croatian, but that is, of course, easier said than done.
When the topic of his brother cropped up again, Vuskovic acknowledged that his dream of playing with him doesn't have to be fulfilled this year. The two could also meet again at their formative club, Hajduk Split, 10 years down the line, he explained.
What is clear from the interview is that Vuskovic has a good head on his shoulders. He openly admits that he still has room to improve and is constantly trying to get better. "I know my weaknesses," the teenager insisted.
"I’ve been training with a private coach for some time now to work on my speed. As a footballer, you don’t have to be a 100 metre sprinter, but a good start definitely helps. And I’m constantly trying to improve my timing in certain situations. I often act on instinct, but some things just take practice.
"There used to be situations I wanted to anticipate. But sometimes I started too early, and sometimes too late. It’s slowly getting better. This is especially key against fast and skilful strikers. If I know I can’t catch my opponent, it can sometimes help if I take a step forward so he’s offside."
If Spurs can manage to keep hold of Vuskovic, they will get themselves a good one.
