It's official! This has been Chelsea's best transfer window in years

The Xabi Alonso era at Chelsea will officially kick off with their first fixture of the new Premier League season against local rivals Fulham on Monday night.

The Blues had a mixed bag of results during pre-season, but there is significant optimism that Alonso will be able to oversee a serious improvement in performance following a hugely underwhelming 2025-26 campaign, in which they finished in a lowly 10th place in the Premier League table.

With no European football this term, Chelsea’s focus will entirely be on domestic matters and there are several reasons to suggest that owners BlueCo have learned their lessons from a number of transfer failings since their arrival in 2022.

In fact, the 2026 summer window has arguably been Chelsea’s best in years.

Lack of experience addressed

BlueCo’s naive transfer strategy during their reign at Chelsea has seen them almost exclusively sign players aged 23 or under in a bid to build a squad capable of achieving consecutive years of success in the future.

However, they have sorely lacked an experienced head to guide their youngsters and this lack of maturity has underpinned their woes in recent years.

Alonso identified this as a clear area that must be addressed this summer, and Chelsea quickly reacted by finalising deals for English duo Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, who have a combined 1,219 senior games under their belt.

Neither player are likely to be regular starters for Chelsea this season, but they will both play a key role behind the scenes and they will be tasked with instilling a winning mentality at Stamford Bridge.

Superstar attacker signed

Last summer, Chelsea signed a new superstar attacker in the form of Joao Pedro and they have made it two in two years with the purchase of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a whopping €138 million.

Cole Palmer has been tipped to rekindle his best form after an injury-hit 2025-26 season and with Rogers added to their forward line, Chelsea now have an attack that will be feared by every Premier League club.

The left wing position has been a key issue for several years, but Chelsea have fixed this problem with the signing of Rogers, who is likely to operate in a left-sided No.10 position in Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 system.

The England superstar has scored 18 goals and provided 16 assists across the last two Premier League seasons, and Chelsea finally have a plethora of attacking options to choose from, with Estevao Willian, Geovany Quenda, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, Emmanuel Emegha and Welbeck also at Alonso’s disposal.

Squad trimmed down

With no European football this year, Chelsea simply had to reduce the size of their first-team squad and they have achieved this so far this summer.

Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Tyrique George and Jimmy-Jay Morgan have all been sold, while Benoit Badiashile, Alejandro Garnacho, Filip Jorgensen and Dastan Satpaev have departed on loan.

Furthermore, they are in advanced talks over deals for Nicolas Jackson, Deivid Washington, Omari Kellyman and Axel Disasi, with Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana also expected to depart before Deadline Day.

The Chelsea hierarchy have refined their squad to Alonso’s taste and with strong depth at the Spaniard's disposal, they look primed to challenge for the Champions League places once again and perhaps even more.

Loan market optimised

The final reason why Chelsea’s 2026 summer window has been their best under BlueCo is their use of the loan market, particularly in regards to their academy talents.

Chelsea have a storied history of sending their Cobham graduates on loan to the EFL, but it’s a facet of the market they have remarkably ignored during the BlueCo reign. Instead, the west London giants have favoured keeping their academy stars in the building and this has arguably stunted their growth given the benefit of playing consistent senior football.

This strategy has changed over the summer and Chelsea have reverted to type by sending their youngsters on loan to a host of EFL clubs.

Reggie Walsh joined Wigan Athletic earlier this week and he enjoyed a sensational debut versus Leyton Orient on Saturday, with manager Gary Caldwell admitting after the match: “I said it to you guys (the media) last week, I see him in training...and you don't want to get too excited...and I still don't want to get too excited.

“For a 17-year-old kid to play with that understanding, quality, physicality…we thought about taking him off, but he kept doing things that were impressive. He was one of our biggest threats in the game, so I had to leave him out there for the 90 minutes...I'm delighted with him.”

Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, meanwhile, has been sent on loan to Portsmouth and he netted his first goal for the Championship side during their 3-1 win over Lincoln City on Saturday.

In addition, Genesis Antwi (Strasbourg), Jesse Derry (Sporting CP) and Harrison Murray-Campbell (KV Kortrijk) have moved to clubs in Europe, with Chelsea deciding against prioritising the PL2 title like last year.

Cobham is one of the best academies in world football and by sending their biggest talents out on loan, in order to gain valuable experience in a first-team environment, BlueCo have finally accepted that youth football perhaps isn’t the best preparation for Chelsea’s youngsters.

Whether their transfer success will result in an encouraging campaign remains to be seen, but BlueCo deserve credit for several excellent pieces of business in the market.
