Juventus have joined Inter in the race to sign Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, but a deal hinges on two crucial factors.

Article continues under the video

The Italy international is increasingly becoming the subject of speculation. Calafiori has lost his place to Piero Hincapie in recent weeks, and this has stoked the rumour mill ahead of the summer.

The 23-year-old has only been at Arsenal since 2024, but reports increasingly suggest that he could be on the move again after this season. Even Chelsea have been associated with a move for the versatile defender.

However, a move to Stamford Bridge is viewed as unlikely. That is because Calafiori is believed to be keen to return to Italy if he is to leave Arsenal this summer. He previously insisted that he would jump at the chance to rejoin formative club AS Roma.

The Giallorossi, though, are probably not in a position to make a move for Calafiori. Reports in Italy have suggested that the Azzurri star could command a fee in the region of €50 million, which Roma simply can't pay.

Inter, Juventus keen on Calafiori

Instead, it is Inter and Juventus who are seemingly doing battle for the 23-year-old. The former view him as an ideal replacement for Alessandro Bastoni, who is ready to leave the Nerazzurri for Barcelona.

With Juventus, the situation is slightly more complex. The Bianconeri are not actively looking to replace any of their current players, but they are keen to add a left-sided centre-back to their squad. Gazzetta dello Sport adds that surprise sales from the Turin club can't be ruled out.

What makes Calafiori so attractive is the fact that he is a domestic player. Juventus, with the blessing of owner John Elkann, are looking to build an Italian spine, and the Arsenal star would be a key piece in that. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali remains the club's dream target.

However, signing Calafiori (or Tonali, for that matter) is not an easy undertaking. His hefty price tag and Arsenal's reluctance to sell mean that Juventus can only begin to seriously consider a deal if they qualify for the Champions League.

That's not all, though. The Old Lady will also need Calafiori to do his part and push for the move to soften Arsenal's stance and make a deal more affordable. Evidently, it is far from guaranteed that the Italy star will return to Serie A this summer.
