Arsenal will sack Mikel Arteta if he fails to win the Premier League or the Champions League this season, according to a blockbuster report from Spain.

The Gunners are currently six points clear of second-place Manchester City in the English top flight table, but that gap will be wiped out entirely if they lose to Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday and the eight-time Premier League champions win their game in hand versus Crystal Palace.

Arsenal have been the favourites for Premier League glory for months, but their title hopes were dented by a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday and they have now suffered three losses in their last four matches across all competitions, with the only exception a 1-0 win over Sporting CP in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

It has been widely reported that Arteta is in talks to sign a new contract at the Emirates Stadium and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that negotiations over fresh terms will continue following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.

However, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claim that Arteta will be fired by the Arsenal hierarchy if he fails to lead the club to Premier League or Champions League glory this season.

In addition, it’s reported that former Gunners midfielder Cesc Fabregas is the club’s preferred replacement for Arteta this summer. The 38-year-old is currently in charge of Serie A side Como and they are fifth in the Italian top flight table after an excellent domestic season.

Analysis: Should Arsenal sack Mikel Arteta?

While Arsenal have endured a tricky run of form in recent months, the Premier League title remains in their hands, while they are still one of the favourites for Champions League glory too.

However, Arteta has reverted to a more pragmatic style of football this season and his reputation will be harmed significantly if they end the campaign without any silverware - which is certainly a possibility given their current performance level.

But, he has earned the benefit of time given the transformation Arsenal have undergone since his appointment and a sacking would likely be a huge error, despite the promise that Fabregas has displayed during his short managerial career thus far.
