Newcastle 'agree' Sandro Tonali summer transfer
Newcastle have an agreement to sell Sandro Tonali this summer if one condition is met after Manchester United made their intentions clear to sign the Italian star.
Tonali has emerged as one of the standout midfielders in the Premier League since his €60 million move from Milan in 2023 and has been a key figure for Newcastle after returning from a ten-month ban for betting violations in August 2024.
The 25-year-old’s contract at St James’ Park is understood to run until 2029 but Newcastle could be forced to reluctantly cash in on their star midfielder this summer after strong interest from teams such as United, Arsenal and Manchester City.
Newcastle’s are in danger of missing out on European football for next season, with Eddie Howe’s side currently sitting 12th in the table, and such an outcome could have a detrimental effect on their chances of keeping hold of Tonali.
According to the Shields Gazette, Tonali’s representatives believe they have a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ that the player can leave the club in the summer if the Magpies fail to qualify for Europe and that offers will be considered for him despite Newcastle deeming him as ‘untouchable’.
However, should Newcastle finish the season strongly, there is said to be ‘every chance’ that Tonali remains with the club, although he will ‘expect’ to leave Tyneside unless Champions League or Europa League qualification is secured, with Conference League football unlikely to be enough to meet his ambitions.
Newcastle looking for quick resolution over Tonali future
Despite his agent declaring that a move to an elite Premier League club is the ‘goal’, Tonali has not asked to leave Newcastle and he is believed to be happy in the city.
However, United see Tonali as a top target to strengthen in midfield this summer, alongside the likes of Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba, and an approach from the Red Devils may unsettle the Italy international.
Newcastle are reluctant to face another Alexander Isak situation which plagued their summer last year and they would want Tonali’s situation resolved early into the transfer window.
But the Magpies will not sell Tonali for a cheap fee and, with plenty of interest in the number eight, United could be forced into a bidding war if they wish to take advantage of the uncertainty in the player’s future.
