Man Utd close in on Kobbie Mainoo contract agreement - David Ornstein
Manchester United are closing in on new contracts for Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, according to David Ornstein.
The Red Devils appear to be on the verge of solving a major headache by tying young star Mainoo to the club long-term. After being on the outside looking in under Ruben Amorim, the 20-year-old has been revitalised by Michael Carrick.
This has earned Mainoo a return to Thomas Tuchel's England squad, but uncertainty over his future has persisted. With a contract only until 2027 - though with the option for a 12-month extension - sorting a new deal was a major priority.
Mainoo was previously keen to leave the club, albeit only on loan. Under Amorim, the midfielder twice requested to be allowed to gain minutes elsewhere, but the club was reluctant to let him leave. Napoli were his most persistent suitors, and they remain interested.
However, the situation has now drastically changed, and Mainoo is close to agreeing fresh terms until 2031 with a "significantly improved salary," according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
Maguire also set for a new deal
Ornstein has revealed that centre-back Harry Maguire, who has also returned to the England squad, is in line for a new deal, as well. His current contract would have expired this summer.
Man Utd made a new deal contingent on the 33-year-old agreeing to lower his salary demands, and it appears that common ground has been found. His fresh deal will run until 2027 with the option for another season.
Maguire was one of Amorim's key allies in the dressing room, and the Portuguese was strongly in favour of handing him a new contract. The veteran defender has also been ever-present under Carrick.
Like Mainoo, Maguire has started all of the interim coach's games so far. Both have been included in an England squad for the first time since Tuchel took the job.
"It's good to make the point I have nothing against Manchester United," the Three Lions boss explained earlier on Friday. "It's just to acknowledge the achievement of Manchester United, as a team.
"I think they have had an outstanding run since Michael Carrick is in charge. Harry and Kobbie have been a big part of that.
"So, it's like I said, the last camp before the US and the last chance also, for me, to get to know new players and to learn about new players. Kobbie is one of them, Harry is not a new player in an England shirt, of course, but is new to me in a camp.
"I want to see them around other players, I want to feel them around the pitch and see what they are capable of, and learn about them, and then will make a clear decision in May."
