Manchester United are set to extend Harry Amass’ contract ahead of a possible loan deal during the upcoming January transfer window.

The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at both Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City in the Championship, and he was widely expected to depart Old Trafford on another temporary deal over the summer.

However, the Red Devils hierarchy were unable to finalise a transfer and Amass has subsequently made two appearances for the club’s U21 side in the Premier League 2 so far this term.

The England U20 international also made a cameo appearance off the bench versus Sabah in the Champions League, but he is yet to be included in a Premier League matchday squad this season and he is widely expected to leave on loan in January if Man Utd are able to find a suitor.

Amass has less than one year remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford, however the club have the power to extend his deal by a further 12 months and they are set to trigger this option, as confirmed by the Manchester Evening News.

The Man Utd hierarchy have agreed to extend Amass’ contract in order to “protect” his value ahead of the 2027 summer transfer window, when they will look to finalise a permanent sale.

Meanwhile, the England youngster could be set for another loan move in January, although any prospective deal will rely on the fitness situation of both Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu, who are Man Utd’s two senior left-back options at current.

Will Man Utd sign a new left-back in 2027?

While Amass, 19, is regarded as an excellent talent, it seems highly unlikely that he will break into the Man Utd first-team and the club are therefore eager to dip into the transfer market to sign a long-term replacement for Shaw.

Lewis Hall was regarded as a priority target over the summer, but he has now signed a new contract at Newcastle United and it will therefore take a huge transfer fee to secure his signature next year.

A more realistic target is Alejandro Balde, who is expected to leave Barcelona in 2027 after falling behind fellow academy graduate Xavi Espart in the pecking order under Hansi Flick.
