Man Utd make swap demand for Rashford in Laporta's first job after Barcelona presidential victory
Joan Laporta’s first task after being re-elected as Barcelona’s president could be to negotiate for the permanent signing of Marcus Rashford after Manchester United reportedly asked for a player in exchange.
Laporta will continue in the role he has held since 2021 after it was confirmed on Sunday that he received 68.1% of the votes from Barcelona members, ahead of rival Victor Font.
Having moved to balance Barcelona’s finances in recent years while also overseeing a sporting project that led to Hansi Flick’s side winning La Liga last season, Laporta’s victory is seen as a way of continuing the club’s stability going forward.
And part of that stability seemingly includes keeping hold of Rashford after a positive loan spell, although Barca are hoping to drive down the optional €30 million fee to turn the 28-year-old’s move into a permanent one.
United have been adamant that they will not lower their demands on a fee they already consider to be below market value but Catalan outlet El Nacional claims that the Premier League side have proposed an alternative by asking Barca to include young midfielder Marc Casado in the deal.
It is believed that United would be ‘willing to accept’ an offer of €10m plus Casado, leaving the deal in the hands of Barca as they consider the prospect of reluctantly parting ways with a highly-rated youngster.
Casado swap could hold keys to Rashford sale for Man Utd
Casado is admired by Barcelona and they would be reluctant to let go of an academy graduate but the 22-year-old has only made nine starts in La Liga this season and is not a key figure in Hansi Flick’s plans.
With just two years left on his contract, a swap deal for Casado could prove an appealing way for Barca to save their limited budget and also keep hold of an important player in Rashford.
Laporta had spoken last week of Rashford’s future, saying: "We could extend the loan further; it depends on what Deco wants. There are formulas, such as paying part of the buy option to Manchester United and figuring out the rest later."
Barca sporting director Deco had previously claimed that he was ‘happy’ with Rashford’s contributions this season and that the club would be interested in extending his stay, although the financial implications will determine whether a deal can be achieved.
