Liverpool plot spectacular move for 'untouchable' Chelsea star
Liverpool are interested in poaching Chelsea wonderkid Josh Acheampong.
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest prospects at Stamford Bridge, but it hasn't always been easy for him. Last season, when Acheampong looked poised to break into the first team, he found himself frozen out.
Chelsea effectively banished the youngster unless he signed a new contract, which he ultimately did. He fielded interest from various clubs around England and Europe last summer but decided to stay, feeling that he could have a big role to play this season.
However, this hasn't always been the case. The versatile defender has made 24 appearances this term, 13 of which have come as a starter. More often than not, though, he has been left to languish on the bench.
Between the beginning of November and the end of December, Acheampong was an unused substitute in a whopping nine consecutive Premier League fixtures, and the situation hasn't improved much under Liam Rosenior. He hasn't featured in the league in over a month.
Acheampong again drawing interest
Suitors were lurking in January, but Chelsea made it clear that they did not want to lose the England youth international. Because of his lack of action, however, the Blues' resolve will again be tested this summer.
In recent weeks, it has been claimed that Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Acheampong's situation, while CaughtOffside has now added Liverpool to his long list of admirers.
The report asserts that Chelsea could be compelled to sell at the right price to help balance the books. Acheampong would represent pure profit, and fees in the region of €30 million could be enough to make the West London outfit reconsider their stance, it is stated.
This is despite the fact that Chelsea view Acheampong as "untouchable" and that they believe he has the potential to become a star player. They have repeatedly shown that they are willing to cash in on homegrown youngsters to fund their frantic transfer business.
Acheampong was keen to stay last summer, but having often been forced to watch on from the substitutes bench this season, he may be more open to a departure in the upcoming window.
