Fabrizio Romano Transfer News: Rosenior sack stance, new Chelsea target, Guimaraes to Man Utd truth
Football news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on several major transfer stories ahead of this summer, including the latest on Liam Rosenior, Said El Mala and Bruno Guimaraes.
Tottenham update
Tottenham Hotspur are in the midst of a relegation battle, but Romano has clarified that Igor Tudor’s position at the club currently remains safe.
“Tottenham remain confident at the moment with Igor Tudor,” Romano admitted in his latest YouTube video.
“We know Tudor is not going to be the manager next season for sure, but he is still in charge after recent positive results against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. The idea at Tottenham right now is to continue with Tudor and try to go until the end of the season if possible, and then appoint a new manager. It will also be a very important summer for Tottenham in the transfer market.
“Obviously, whether they are going to be in the Premier League or the Championship will be crucial to understanding the future of several players. I have already told you to keep an eye on Cristian Romero, who could be one to watch leading into the summer transfer window.
“After the Atletico Madrid game, Romero did not close the door to a potential exit. He was very serious in his statement, saying that now is the time to focus because the team is in danger, they have to help Tottenham, and then they will see. Several clubs have already started making calls for him.”
Romano added: “The update today is to maintain Inter’s interest in Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, because I expect Tottenham to add another goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, and Vicario can leave the club. There is interest from Italy, especially from Inter, as they are expected to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper.
“Yann Sommer could leave on a free transfer or stay as a backup, and Vicario has always been one of the favourites of Inter director Piero Ausilio. Inter wanted to sign Vicario in the same summer they sold Andre Onana to Manchester United in 2023. However, the timing of the Onana negotiations was too slow, and that is why Inter missed the opportunity to sign Vicario, who instead joined Tottenham.
“Now Inter feel the player is ready to return to Italy, and he is very high on their shortlist. There have been no club-to-club discussions yet, so it is still early, but he is a strong candidate to become their new goalkeeper. Vicario could be one to watch in the summer transfer window and could leave Tottenham while continuing to help the team on the pitch during this complicated period.”
Chelsea stance on Liam Rosenior
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior is under pressure following the club’s 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, but he retains the faith of the Blues hierarchy as things stand, according to Romano.
“At the moment, despite all the questions, Chelsea continue to believe in their manager,” the transfer expert said. “We all know football is a results-based industry, so we will see how things develop in the coming months. However, Chelsea are showing full commitment to the project they started with Rosenior, who arrived in January.
“It is very different when a coach arrives mid-season compared to the summer, when you can prepare tactically, technically, and in the transfer market together.
“Arriving in January is always more complicated, especially with a very young squad like Chelsea’s. The idea is to support and trust Rosenior, but of course he has to deliver, as every manager does.
“Chelsea are not judging him based on just a few games, as it has only been a matter of weeks. The club decided to appoint him after exploring several options when they parted ways with Enzo Maresca, and the plan is to continue backing him.”
Chelsea tracking German talent Said El Mala
Meanwhile, Romano has confirmed that Chelsea are interested in signing Koln winger Said El Mala this summer.
He revealed: “It is also true, as reported in Germany, that Said El Mala, a talent born in 2006 who will turn 20 in August, is a player being followed by Chelsea and is on their shortlist. There are at least three or four clubs trying to enter the race for him. He is a big talent, highly appreciated across Europe.
“Newcastle have also made some calls, and several English clubs, as well as teams from other countries, are interested in this young player with huge potential. This is expected to be a significant battle for El Mala in the coming weeks, with talks and discussions already starting.”
Man Utd’s midfield plans
Finally, Romano provided a major update on Man Utd’s midfield plans amid intensified rumours they could sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes this summer.
“As I said at the beginning of February, we should expect to hear many midfielders linked with Man Utd as it will be a busy summer in that position,” Romano admitted.
“Every day there is a new link, a new story, and a different player mentioned. One day it is Joao Neves, another day it is Amadou Onana, then Sandro Tonali, Eduardo Camavinga, Bruno Guimaraes, and many others. At the moment, this is about appreciation and initial contacts, but Man Utd have not yet decided which players they want to pursue seriously in negotiations.
“Guimaraes is appreciated by Man Utd, as are players like Sandro Tonali. However, it is important to remember how complicated it is to sign players from Newcastle. The club does not want to lose all their best players in the same summer, so these deals are not easy.
“The £100 million release clause for Guimaraes was only valid in summer 2024, and according to my information, it is no longer active. Any deal would now require full negotiations, with Newcastle having their own valuation and other clubs having their own perspectives. Man Utd are interested in several midfielders but have not yet decided which profile they want to prioritise.
“At the moment, it is still an internal discussion, with players appreciated but no final decision made to move forward on a specific target.
“It will depend on the budget, potential Champions League qualification, and also the manager. Whether it is Michael Carrick or another coach, that decision will influence the type of midfielder the club pursues. For example, Ruben Amorim was a big admirer of Carlos Baleba at Brighton and pushed strongly for him. Now the situation could be different, so we will continue to follow developments, but one thing is certain - Man Utd will be busy in the midfield market.”
