Chelsea receive fresh Xavi Simons transfer message
Chelsea have been handed a fresh boost in their long-standing interest in Netherlands attacking midfielder Xavi Simons.
The Blues were in advanced talks to sign the 22-year-old last summer and he was widely expected to secure a move to Stamford Bridge before the end of the window.
However, Chelsea were unable to finalise a transfer fee agreement with RB Leipzig, despite finalising personal terms with Simons, and he eventually joined Tottenham Hotspur instead, who paid €65 million for his signature.
Since his arrival in north London, Simons has struggled to display the form he regularly produced in the Bundesliga and he has only registered seven goal contributions in 34 appearances across all competitions for Spurs.
The Dutchman signed a five-year contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in August, but he could be set to leave the club after just one season, according to transfer reporter Nicolo Schira.
Spurs are currently just one point clear of the relegation zone after a dismal campaign in the Premier League and Simons is reportedly among the stars who could depart the club this summer.
Verdict: Will Chelsea attempt to sign Xavi Simons this summer?
After missing out on Simons to Tottenham, Chelsea finalised the loan signing of Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton & Hove Albion, but he returned to the AMEX Stadium in January, before joining Leeds United, after failing to become a regular in west London.
As a result, the Blues’ only true back-up to Cole Palmer at current is Enzo Fernandez, who is also in Liam Rosenior’s preferred starting XI.
Unsurprisingly, Chelsea have therefore been tipped to pursue a new No.10 this summer and Simons could potentially become an option if he opts to leave Spurs after just one season at the club.
However, his lack of form in the Premier League will be a major concern to Chelsea and this could prevent a deal from occurring. A Tottenham exit could still be on the cards though, with Simons highly likely to depart if they are relegated to the Championship.
