Tottenham defender Cristian Romero once again appeared to criticise the club on Monday amid rumoured interest from Real Madrid.

The Spurs captain has been in the headlines a lot lately, and not just for his performances on the pitch. Romero has been crucial for the struggling North London club both defensively and offensively this term.

However, it has been away from the pitch where the 27-year-old has arguably made even bigger waves. Romero has shown that he is not afraid to publicly criticise Tottenham amid their disappointing season under Thomas Frank.

In early January, the Argentine lashed out at club leadership for refusing to face the music in a post so confrontational he later felt compelled to edit it. "We are responsible, there's no doubt about that," he wrote. "But we will keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club.

"At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don't - as has been happening for several years now. They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies."

Romero: State of Spurs squad is 'disgraceful'

On Monday, Romero again caused a stir. The captain praised his teammates for grinding out a spectacular 2-2 draw with Man City on Sunday, but he couldn't stop himself from describing the state of Spurs' squad as "disgraceful" due to a lack of available options amid the club's ongoing injury crisis.

"Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible," he began. "I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available - unbelievable but true and disgraceful.

"We’ll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together. All that’s left is to thank all of you, the fans, for being there and for always supporting us."

Romero's outbursts would be eye-catching on their own, but they are even more intriguing in light of reports that he is a target for Real Madrid, with some rumours even suggesting that the Spanish giants made a huge January bid for him.

The 27-year-old signed a new long-term contract with Spurs last summer, but it is looking increasingly unlikely that he will be in North London beyond the summer, let alone until 2029.
