Man Utd attempt €70m Deadline Day HIJACK
Manchester United have attempted to hijack Liverpool’s proposed move for Stade Rennais centre-back Jeremy Jacquet on Transfer Deadline Day.
The France U21 international looked set to join Chelsea this month, but Arne Slot’s side have gazumped their Premier League rivals to his signature by agreeing a deal that could reach €70 million including add-ons.
Jacquet is due to travel to Liverpool to undergo his medical today, however his arrival will be delayed until this summer, with the Frenchman set to remain at Rennes for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
The 20-year-old has been an integral player under Habib Beye so far this campaign, racking up 19 appearances across all competitions, and Liverpool have moved swiftly to finalise a deal for his signature amid concerns that Ibrahima Konate will leave Anfield on a Bosman deal this summer.
While Chelsea were considered to be Liverpool’s biggest rivals in the race for Jacquet, Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Man Utd attempted an unsuccessful late hijack before the Reds agreed a deal.
He posted on X: “Exclusive | Manchester United tried to hijack Jeremy Jacquet’s summer transfer to Liverpool in the last hours, but were unsuccessful. Jacquet already had an agreement in place with Liverpool.”
Jeremy Jacquet to Liverpool verdict
Although Liverpool are set to announce the signing of Jacquet before the end of Deadline Day, the fact he will only arrive this summer has bemused former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Murphy said: “It's odd, especially because they are so reliant on the [Virgil] Van Dijk and [Ibrahima] Konate partnership.
“I wouldn't find it as odd if they are only fighting for the Premier League, because they're out of it, but they've got a great chance in the Champions League and they don't really have any cover because [Joe] Gomez is never fit.”
