Man Utd in striker HIJACK after €26m bid
Manchester United are at serious risk of missing out on Stade Rennais wonderkid Mohamed Kader Meite as Al-Hilal are stepping up their pursuit of the striker.
The 18-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in French football. Despite his youth, Meite has already racked up 32 senior appearances for Rennes.
Although he can still improve on his conversion rate - he has scored five goals so far - the towering centre-forward is a sought-after commodity. Meite is already a France U21 international.
Man Utd have been repeatedly linked with the teenager since the summer. Reports of the Red Devils chasing a deal for him have increased in recent weeks, but they are far from the only club keen on him.
According to L'Equipe, Al-Hilal have now intensified their efforts to sign Meite. An initial offer, worth €23 million guaranteed and €3m in bonuses, has been rejected by Rennes.
Meite transfer battle heats up
The Saudi giants are expected to return with a fresh bid for a striker, but their Ligue 1 counterparts insist that they do not want to lose him mid-season. Rennes are currently competing for a European spot and want to keep their squad together.
This is also why they have informed Chelsea that they do not intend to sell defender Jeremy Jacquet this month. Talks reportedly now centre around a move in the summer, with Liverpool and Bayern also in the race.
Regarding Meite, the Bretons are in talks over a new deal for him as his current terms expire in 2028. Al-Hilal, however, will not be deterred by this. The Saudi Pro League wants to stop being perceived as a retirement league and has begun to target young players like Meite.
As for Man Utd, Meite is viewed as a replacement should a forward leave this month. However, the Red Devils are not expected to sell any key players in the final days of the window. That said, Juventus are back in talks over Joshua Zirkzee, so there may yet be a surprise.
