Fermin Lopez makes FINAL decision on Chelsea transfer
Fermin Lopez has definitively snubbed Chelsea by agreeing a new contract at Barcelona.
The Spain international has been the subject of interest from the Blues. Chelsea made a late offer for him in the summer, but their bid - believed to have been worth around €40 million - was rejected out of hand.
It was an insulting offer for a player who was not for sale and who did not want to leave Barcelona. Chelsea sources later claimed that the club never expected the bid to be accepted and that it was simply made to signal interest in the player.
Be that as it may, the 22-year-old ultimately stayed put, and the Blues' attempt to turn his head backfired. Instead of becoming unsettled, Fermin has evolved into a key player for Barcelona.
The attacking midfielder has recorded 10 goals and 10 assists in 25 appearances across all competitions. Fermin has been a guaranteed starter for Barcelona in the Champions League and in the cup competitions, while playing half of the available LaLiga matches from the beginning.
Fermin agrees new Barcelona contract
The Catalans are now set to reward the Spaniard with a new contract. According to Fabrizio Romano and reports in Spain, Fermin has agreed terms with Barcelona until 2031.
The deal will include a significant pay increase in recognition of his importance to the side. Giving him a better salary became a priority after Chelsea's bid in the summer.
Romano reports that Fermin could sign his new contract already this week, which will officially put an end to Chelsea's pursuit for the foreseeable future. It means that the Blues will have to explore different targets.
Chelsea brought in Facundo Buonanotte after missing out on Fermin in the summer, but his loan from Brighton was cut short this month due to his lack of minutes. Adding another attack-minded player is on the agenda for 2026.
