Romano drops major Celtic update: €6m star makes decision on Parkhead move
RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager has made his decision on a potential move to Celtic, while the transfer stance of Hoops star Arne Engels has also been clarified.
The Parkhead club's January window has so far not been as exciting as many supporters would have hoped. Only Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara have so far joined Martin O'Neill's side on loan, so more business is needed before the deadline.
Celtic are exploring a sensational move for Bodo/Glimt's Champions League hero Kasper Hogh, while interest remains in Chelsea outcast David Datro Fofana. But the Hoops don't only want to bolster the attack.
There have also been discussions over defensive reinforcements, with Frankfurt centre-back Aurele Amenda one of the targets, and the midfield is also an area of concern. Callum McGregor has rubbished exit talk for now, but the 32-year-old isn't getting any younger.
Due to the uncertainty over their captain, Celtic have been linked with an ambitious move for out-of-contract RB Leipzig star Xaver Schlager. However, the Austria international, who currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €6 million, will not be heading to Glasgow.
Schlager picks Juventus, Engels keen on Leipzig
According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus are advancing on an agreement to sign Schlager on a free transfer in the summer. Leipzig are desperate to tie him down to a new deal, but reports in Germany have increasingly suggested over the past week that he will depart the club.
As a result, and also due to the retirement of Kevin Kampl, Leipzig are scouring the midfield market. Their top target is reportedly Borussia Monchengladbach star Rocco Reitz, but he is only an option for the summer.
Another name that has been associated with the Bundesliga outfit is Celtic midfielder Arne Engels. It has been asserted that the versatile midfielder could already be on the move this month, although a summer exit is more likely.
Contrary to claims in the UK, reports in Germany have suggested that the Belgium international is keen to sign for Leipzig and return to the Bundesliga, having previously starred for Augsburg. He remains one to watch until Deadline Day. Losing him would be a blow for Celtic.
