RB Leipzig have emerged as the leading candidates for Engels’ signature in recent days, with Ole Werner’s side eager to land a new midfielder before the winter window closes following the retirement of Kevin Kampl.

Rocco Reitz (Borussia Monchengladbach) and Ardon Jashari (AC Milan) are also reportedly on Leipzig’s radar, however Engels is regarded as a top target by the German outfit and they are keen to agree a deal before Transfer Deadline Day on 2 February.

Despite this, the Belgium midfielder is expected to remain at Celtic until this summer at least.

That is according to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, who posted on X: “Celtic midfielder Arne Engels is likely to stay despite interest from Germany.

“RB Leipzig enquired, but it’s understood Engels is happy at Celtic & wants to help the club retain the title. Engels is also believed to be really enjoying working under Martin O’Neill & his staff.”

Engels became the Hoops’ second-most expensive signing of all time when he arrived from Augsburg in 2024 and he has notched 14 goals and 18 assists in 85 appearances for the club over the past 18 months.

Celtic complete new signing

News that Engels is set to stay at Celtic comes after the Hoops confirmed the winter signing of Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tomas Cvancara.

He has joined the club on an initial loan deal with an option to buy following the Hoops’ failure to sign either Callum Wilson or Kyogo Furuhashi.

Following confirmation of the move, Cvancara said: "It’s a massive honour to sign for this club. I am so excited to get started and make my own contribution to the team.

"We have lots of challenges ahead of us and I am ready to get going and do everything I can to meet these and bring success to our brilliant supporters. Celtic is one of the great names in world football and I am delighted to be here to play my part."

O’Neill’s side also remain interested in signing David Datro Fofana, who has been recalled by Chelsea after a successful loan stint at Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk.
