Man Utd closing in on deal to sign €55m midfield sensation
Manchester United are "increasingly likely" to sign SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, according to a sensational report.
The Switzerland international has been one of the biggest revelations of the current Bundesliga season. Manzambi has not only become a regular starter for Freiburg, he is now one of the team's best players.
The 20-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder with boundless energy. He has provided four goals and five assists in 26 appearances so far this season, while putting up some of the best attacking metrics for central midfielders in Europe's top leagues.
Unsurprisingly, transfer interest has been increasing in recent months. In December, Napoli explored a deal for him as an alternative to Kobbie Mainoo, who was still struggling for minutes under Ruben Amorim back then.
At the time, FootballTransfers explained that Manzambi would actually be a great replacement for Mainoo at Man Utd. Of course, Amorim has since been sacked, and Mainoo has become an integral part in the side of interim boss Michael Carrick.
Man Utd want Manzambi
Despite Mainoo staying, SportsBoom now claims that Man Utd are Manzambi's most persistent suitors. In fact, the report goes so far as to claim that a summer deal is "increasingly likely."
It is a "near-certainty" that Manzambi ends up in the Premier League this year, but Napoli, Bayern and PSG are also named as his suitors. In addition to Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea are interested in the 20-year-old.
Man Utd, though, are said to be leading the race for him. However, signing him will not be easy, as Freiburg are operating from a position of "total strength" due to the player's contract running until 2030.
The Bundesliga side are demanding a club-record sum of up to €55 million. This would more than double the current highest fee of €25m, which was set by Kevin Schade when he joined Brentford permanently in January 2023.
