Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has responded to speculation linking his side with a move for Florian Wirtz after admitting he feels ‘a little sorry’ for the Liverpool midfielder.

Wirtz was briefly the most expensive player in British football history when he joined Liverpool in 2025 for €125 million but the 23-year-old has struggled during his time in the Premier League, providing just five goals and four assists in 39 games.

The playmaker’s struggles have continued this season despite Andoni Iraola replacing Arne Slot as manager and reports have linked Wirtz with a return to Germany, with Bayern allegedly considering a move, as well as Chelsea.

However, Hainer insisted that, while he admired Wirtz and was hopeful to see the player recapture his best form, he is ultimately happy with Bayern’s squad and is not looking to pursue a deal.

“First of all, I think Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player, there’s absolutely no question about that,” Hainer said. “I almost feel a little sorry for him that he hasn’t yet reached the same form in England that he had at Leverkusen, because we also need him for the German national team.”

He added: “We have such a top-class squad, we’re incredibly happy at the moment, and therefore it’s not an issue for us.”

Florian Wirtz: Liverpool determined to make success of Bayern Munich target

Having been given the benefit of the doubt during his first season at Anfield, in which Liverpool generally struggled to defend their Premier League title, Wirtz has come under increasing pressure this year from pundits such as Jamie Carragher.

Despite Wirtz’s form, Liverpool are believed to have no desire to cash in on the German international and are desperate to make a success of his signing.

There has been suggestions that Wirtz is unhappy in England and would be willing to make a return to the Bundesliga but Bayern would be the only team with a realistic chance of being able to finance a deal.

Bayern’s interest is believed to have only been informal and exploratory, with internal discussions thought to have been held about the prospects of signing Wirtz, and Hainer’s comments indicate that a deal would only be considered if the player’s situation worsened at Liverpool.
