It's official: Man Utd are back and Ruben Amorim has Mason Mount to thank
Say it quietly but we’re at that point of the cycle again. Manchester United might be back. And it could be all down to one player in particular who has changed the fortunes of Ruben Amorim’s side.
United scored four goals in an away game for the first time under Amorim in the 4-1 win over Wolves on Monday night to take them to sixth in the Premier League and just a point off the top four.
Of course, United were always expected to comfortably beat the bottom side in the league who have just two points in 15 matches but there will have been many positives for Amorim regardless, even if his side went into half time having conceded a sloppy equaliser.
While United’s turnaround was largely due to two goals and an assist from captain Bruno Fernandes, it was the performance of Mason Mount that really got fans purring as he got on the scoresheet.
Mount has now scored three times in his last seven games – more than his total in the last two years combined, although that doesn’t say much considering he is already close to eclipsing the most minutes he’s ever played for United in a season since joining.
It is now just one defeat in the last nine for United and Mount’s return to form and fitness has been a huge part of that, with the midfielder potentially set to lead a resurgence for his team as well as his own credentials in the coming months.
Mount playing his way back into England contention after injury nightmare
Mount’s time at Old Trafford had been nothing short of a disaster prior to this season, having played just 31 Premier League matches since his €67 million transfer from Chelsea in 2023.
The 26-year-old had virtually been written off and forgotten about, such was his decline and frequent absences through injury, but Mount is now enjoying his longest run of matches since his signing and played arguably his best game in a red shirt against Wolves.
Mount’s last eight starts for United has yielded six wins and 2.3 points per game, while the Red Devils have won just twice in the previous nine matches he hasn’t played in, gaining just 1.1 points per game.
Amorim has found rhythm with Mount as one of his attacking midfielders and the England international has excelled with his pressing and eye for goal to recapture some of his best days that have not been seen since his time with Chelsea.
Mount’s new lease on life could even see him find his way into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad as a dark horse for the World Cup next summer, with his former coach knowing his game inside out and being responsible for the best form in his career.
Having received the most recent of his 36 caps in 2022, Mount will be determined to continue proving his worth to United before showcasing what he can bring to England in one of the most impressive comeback stories of the season,
Man Utd could be back…and Mason Mount might be too.
