Man Utd learn Mateta decision as Sesko 'babysitter' eyes 'ambitious' move
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is likely to leave the Premier League for his next move, despite links with Manchester United, according to a report.
The France international has been sensational for Crystal Palace since Oliver Glasner took charge of the club in February 2024, but much like the head coach, he, too, is facing an uncertain future at Selhurst Park.
Their successful collaboration has made them the object of prying eyes. In recent weeks, it has been claimed that Man Utd could look to move for Mateta in January to take the pressure off the young Benjamin Sesko.
However, Mateta himself has declared that he is not thinking about his future at all. The 28-year-old insists that his sole focus is on making France's squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace have been trying to extend his contract, which currently runs until 2027. Reports regarding the state of these discussions are conflicting, with some claiming that talks are taking place, while Fabrizio Romano insists that there has been no movement since the summer.
Mateta to leave the Premier League?
TEAMtalk has now provided a small update on the situation and reports that a departure in 2026 is a concrete possibility, although a January move appears highly unlikely.
Interestingly, it is claimed that there is a very good chance that Mateta leaves the Premier League altogether with his next move. It was previously reported that the Frenchman is attracted to Serie A, where he has received interest from AC Milan.
It is therefore quite plausible that Mateta heads abroad when he decides to leave Palace. Given his age, the striker is targeting potentially one last 'ambitious' transfer to a European giant.
The report adds that there appears to be little hope of a contract extension at Selhurst Park because the two parties are struggling to find a middle ground on financial terms, while Mateta also appears unconvinced by Palace's ability to match his footballing ambitions.
