Liverpool’s Mo Salah transfer plan announced
Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah’s future is up in the air after being benched by Reds boss Arne Slot for successive Premier League matches.
An iconic figure at Anfield, Salah signed a new two-year contract with the Reds late last season to commit his future with the club until 2027.
Things are not going according to plan for the 33-year-old Egypt international, though. Coming off the back of a record-breaking season in which his goals and assists propelled Slot’s side to Premier League glory, Salah has not hit the same heights.
Worse, the attacker’s perceived lack of defensive work has been singled out for criticism from pundits.
While Slot has publicly defended the forward, the very fact that he has been benched for successive games has set alarm bells ringing, with rumours building that Salah is plotting his exit from Anfield.
Transfer insider Dean Jones has downplayed the prospect of a deal in the upcoming winter transfer window, but the door could be opened ahead of the summer.
No plans for January Salah move as Saudi hover
“The word out of Liverpool is that they don’t expect anything to change with Salah’s situation in January and that he seems committed to helping turn around this season,” he told TeamTalk.
“It’s not beyond reason that Salah could leave for Saudi Arabia in 2026, though.
“We’re talking about a time when it is becoming clear he is on the decline, and yet he could still make a move that would earn him around £150 million-a-year.
“But of course it takes an offer to land before any of this falls into place and for decisions to be made.
“There’s definitely a feeling that he’ll end up there.
“He has also been linked to San Diego in MLS, but the money he would earn there is a fraction of what he could pick up in Saudi.
“It would be a huge surprise if he ended up anywhere else.”
FootballTransfers exclusively revealed in August that this was likely to be Salah’s final season at Liverpool.
What has Arne Slot said?
Slot has been positive on Salah’s Liverpool future.
Speaking after the 2-0 win over West Ham, the first game that he dropped the Egyptian for, he suggested the decision was a pure tactical choice.
“Mo has had an unbelievable career and will have a very good future at this club because he’s such a special player. But when you have four games in 10 days then you have to decide once in a while on a certain lineup,” Slot said.
“The way West Ham set up with a full-back that’s constantly high and a winger who’s inside, I thought this would help the team.”
Despite this, Salah was out of the team as Liverpool drew 1-1 with Sunderland on Wednesday, albeit he came on at half-time, plunging his future into greater doubt.
