Thiago Silva reunion is ON as Chelsea told to bring him home
Thiago Silva could be on his way back to European football in January, with the former Chelsea star having had the door opened to him to return to one of his former clubs.
The Brazil international defender has admitted that he has his eyes set on playing in the 2026 World Cup before he retires, and on Wednesday he terminated his contract with Fluminense six months before the end of his deal in a bid to make that happen.
Chelsea is set to be his ideal destination for a January move because his family still lives in London, according to ESPN Brasil, but AC Milan have also opened their doors to the 41-year-old.
Both clubs are seeking a central defender in the upcoming transfer window, but the Brazilian’s profile is more obviously suited to a short-term deal at San Siro.
Thiago Silva still backed to shine for Chelsea
Chelsea’s project has been based around young players for several years, but according to former England international forward Darren Bent, the Blues should be looking to re-sign Thiago Silva.
“If I’m Chelsea then I’m trying to bring him back in some capacity and if that’s to play, that’s to play,” he told TalkSport.
“I watched him play for Fluminense in the Club World Cup and he still looked good. Yes, of course, he’s not as quick as we know he can be because he’s obviously older in age.
“But his brain is still quick, he was still getting his body position in the right place, he was very rarely getting caught out with the ball in behind.
“He knows full well he’s not the quickest anymore so as they’re about to clear it or clip it over the top: ‘I’ll drop ten yards!’
“I played against Thiago Silva when he was in his pomp. Oh my goodness, animal! Brazil versus England… animal. He had everything: jumps, quick, powerful.
“But now, he just reads the game so well and if I’m Chelsea then I’m trying to bring him back.”
Thiago Silva previously revealed his ambition to return to coach at all his former clubs, effectively admitting that he is open to a return to Chelsea in the process.
