Chelsea have launched an €8 million bid for Saint-Etienne attacker Djylian N’Guessan, who is also being watched by Arsenal, according to reports in France.

The Blues have become noted for their ability to snap up the best young talent across the globe, and they have made a sizeable offer for the 17-year-old forward, who already has 10 senior appearances to his credit and featured for France U20 at the recent World Cup, reaching the semi-finals.

Saint-Etienne have rejected this €8m offer, L’Equipe reports, but Chelsea are expected to go back in for one of the most exciting talents in France.

N’Guessan is out of contract in 2027 and has invited suitors to make offers given that he is refusing to extend his deal with a club that is struggling to win its spot back in Ligue 1 after relegation last season.

Now an “irreparable rift” has opened between the player and his club. This is further underlined by the player’s younger brother having signed with the youth academy of Lyon, Saint-Etienne’s fierce rivals.

The French club’s hand is set to be forced. A sale will be made, but not at any cost. They are holding out for €12.5m and believe that the interest from the Premier League is enough to make it happen.

While Chelsea are frontrunners to sign N’Guessan, Brentford and Arsenal are both tracking the youngster. Paris FC, meanwhile, had a €7.5m bid for the N’Guessan rejected in the summer.

The Blues, meanwhile, have already done recent business with Saint-Etienne, having signed promising midfielder Mathis Amougou from them last January before he was moved on to Strasbourg in the summer.

’Stone cold in the box’ – What makes N’Guessan special?

Although N’Guessan’s playing time for the first team has been relatively limited, head coach Eirik Horneland has not been shy about hailing the player.

“He is a fantastic player, and football appears to be in his blood,” the Norwegian said. “He is a quiet boy, but in the box, stone cold, with excellent ball control and an amazing finish.”

The teenager is unlikely to have a chance to showcase his abilities at Saint-Etienne with his contract dispute raging, making it imperative that he gets his next move right.
