Moises Caicedo will be delighted by the news that Chelsea are back in the race to sign Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez.

The superstar midfielder reportedly requested that the Blues sign his compatriot earlier this year, but Chelsea's interest in Ordonez has been the subject of conflicting reports.

It seems that the Stamford Bridge club were keeping tabs on the 21-year-old at the start of 2025, but this track eventually went cold as the months passed. In the summer, Ordonez was the protagonist of a transfer battle between Marseille and Crystal Palace.

The Ecuador international was keen on making the switch to the South of France after head coach Roberto de Zerbi received a glowing endorsement from his former Brighton star Caicedo. However, Marseille were unable to complete the deal, leaving Ordonez stranded in Belgium.

In January, the young centre-back is expected to belatedly get his big move, although his destination remains as yet unclear. Recent reports have claimed that Chelsea are not in the mix to sign him, but a fresh piece of news now asserts that the situation has changed.

Chelsea back in for Ordonez?

According to Bolavip, Caicedo may get his wish after all. The outlet claims that Chelsea are among the clubs trying to secure Ordonez's signature in January.

The Blues are said to be competing with Liverpool in the race to sign the 21-year-old, and it will ultimately come down to whichever club is prepared to put the most money on the table.

Ordonez still has a long-term deal at Club Brugge, and the Belgian giants won't let him leave on the cheap. It is claimed that it could require north of €40 million to complete a deal.

Still, the outlet posits that it could actually be cheaper to sign him in the winter rather than the summer. That's because Ecuador will compete at the World Cup, and good performances there would see Ordonez's price skyrocket.
