Liverpool have been given a major boost in their pursuit of Marc Guehi after reports in Spain claiming that Real Madrid are set to drop out of the race to sign the Crystal Palace captain next summer.

Guehi is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and the England international is set to command a massive battle for his signature on a free transfer after informing Palace that he will not be renewing his deal.

Having seen Palace pull the plug on Guehi’s move to Liverpool on deadline day this summer, Arne Slot’s side are expected to try again to sign him in the coming months, although Real Madrid’s interest was believed to have complicated their chances of a deal.

However, according to AS, the continued growth in Guehi’s reputation has led to the defender demanding a high salary and signing on fee, which makes a move to Madrid ‘virtually impossible’.

Instead, Liverpool are considered the ‘clear favourites’ to sign Guehi, while Bayern Munich are also described among the ‘frontrunners’, especially if Kim Min-Jae is sold.

Guehi has not made a decision over his future and he could still see out the season with Palace despite suggestions that they could look to cash in on their skipper in January to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

Real Madrid transfer pursuit takes major twist as new ‘priority’ target emerges

Guehi was seen as a potential target for Real Madrid alongside Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate, all of whom also have contracts expiring next summer.

Konate has long-been expected to join Los Blancos, with the same report also claiming that the Frenchman is ‘heading to Madrid’, although Liverpool have not given up hopes of renewing his deal.

Upamecano, meanwhile, has emerged above Konate as Madrid’s ‘top priority’, according to Foot Mercato, with the Bayern Munich star said to already have a verbal agreement with the Spanish giants.

Much is still to be decided, with Madrid also considering targeting multiple defenders if they decide to let Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba both leave at the end of the season when their deals expire.
