Ruben Amorim’s side were desperate to purchase a new number nine before the end of the 2025 summer transfer window and they eventually struck a deal with RB Leipzig to sign Sesko after failing to reach agreements with both Viktor Gyokeres and Liam Delap.

The Slovenia international arrived at Old Trafford for a whopping transfer fee of €76.5 million and he failed to score in his first six games for the club. However, he has now netted in back-to-back Premier League appearances for the Red Devils and he appears to have found his feet in Manchester.

Despite this, Man Utd have rekindled their interest in the aforementioned Mateta after briefly exploring a deal over the summer.

That is according to Fichajes, who claim that Amorim has earmarked the France striker as a top target amid his immense recent form at Crystal Palace.

The 28-year-old has scored 22 goals in 79 Premier League games since the start of the 2023-24 season and Man Utd are reportedly interested in bringing him to Old Trafford next year, in part due to his experience in the English top flight.

However, Palace are unsurprisingly eager to retain the Frenchman and they have placed a €50 million price tag on his head, as per Fichajes, in a bid to ward off interest from Man Utd.

Joshua Zirkzee to leave?

News that Man Utd are interested in Mateta comes after reports suggest that Joshua Zirkzee has decided to leave Old Trafford in January due to concerns he won’t be selected for the 2026 World Cup.

The Netherlands forward has only racked up 82 minutes of action so far this campaign and he has been informed that he needs to be playing regular football in order to be picked by Ronald Koeman.

As a result, Zirkzee has informed Man Utd of his desire to depart the club and his situation is now being closely watched by both Everton and West Ham United.
