OFFICIAL: Graham Potter seals immediate return to management after West Ham sacking
Graham Potter has officially been appointed as the new head coach of the Sweden national team.
The 50-year-old was sacked by West Ham United on 27 September, but he has secured an immediate return to management in the international game following Sweden’s decision to fire Jon Dahl Tomasson last week.
Tomasson was sacked following a dismal start to Sweden’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, with the country picking up just one point from their opening four matches in Group B.
They suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Kosovo last Monday and Tomasson was dismissed in the aftermath of the game amid a real threat of failing to qualify for next summer’s World Cup.
However, due to their triumph in Group 1 of League C in the Nations League, Sweden are able to secure their place at tournament via the play-offs, even without finishing in the top two of their World Cup qualifying group, and Potter has been appointed to guide the nation to the finals for just the second time since 2006.
Graham Potter appointed as new Sweden boss
Following his appointment, Potter told the Swedish FA website: “I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world's best leagues during the weeks.
“My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”
Potter spent seven years as the head coach of Swedish side Ostersunds FK from 2011 to 2018, guiding the club from the fourth-tier to the Europa League in his final campaign in charge.
He oversaw a famous 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in February 2018, although Ostersunds were knocked out after suffering a 3-0 defeat in the first-leg.
Potter was subsequently appointed by Swansea City, before joining Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and then West Ham.
He was sacked by the latter after winning just six of his 25 matches at the helm.
