Chelsea receive Enzo Fernandez transfer verdict as Real Madrid chase deal
Chelsea have been urged to fend off interest from Real Madrid in star midfielder Enzo Fernandez amid increasing rumours that a transfer could take place in 2026.
The Argentina international has been identified as Los Blancos’ priority target for next year as they look to bring a new central midfielder to the club following the departure of Luka Modric to AC Milan on a free transfer in July.
Fernandez’s Chelsea team-mate Moises Caicedo has also been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu in recent weeks, but the World Cup winner remains their first-choice option, and reports in Spain suggest that Xabi Alonso has asked the Real Madrid hierarchy to bring him to the club.
However, Fernandez still has over six-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, and it’s understood that Enzo Maresca’s side have no intention of sanctioning a sale.
The Argentina star is the only Chelsea player with 20 goal contributions since the beginning of 2025 and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards believes the west London giants must retain the 24-year-old.
“I love Enzo,” Richards told The Rest Is Football Podcast. “Enzo has changed his game completely. He was a holder, but now he gets forward at every opportunity, he takes penalties.
“He’s one of the most, I don’t want to say improved because he still bought for £100m. But in terms of being able to adapt from one position to the other, the way he leads his team, he’s a top midfielder, really top midfielder.”
‘Chelsea need a new striker’
Despite praising Fernandez, Richards still believes Chelsea need to sign a quality centre forward to compete for the Premier League title.
“He’s a number 10, isn’t he, [Joao] Pedro? He’s not a number nine,” Richards added. “And I just feel like Chelsea, to go to the next level, they just need someone who can stick the ball in the back of the net at any time.
“Then they will be a real threat. I love the balance of the team.”
