Former Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic has tipped Jadon Sancho to win the Ballon d’Or before the end of his career, despite his struggles over the past four years.

The Englishman has endured a torrid spell since leaving Germany to join Manchester United in 2021, however Terzic believes Sancho still has the potential to win the biggest individual prize in world football.

Terzic has worked with Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak during his career as a coach, and he has admitted that Sancho has the talent to match those four players.

“All those players can win the Ballon d’Or in the future. Even Jadon,” Terzic told The Telegraph.

“From the talent point of view, if you talk about Jadon then maybe five years ago you would talk about Ousmane Dembele in the same way. I am talking about the talent and potential.

“The difference is Erling will reach this level if he stays hungry: Jadon will only reach this level if he keeps smiling - and Jude needs to do both.

“I really love Jude. He and Declan Rice will be the key figures in English football for the next 10 years. They have leadership and Jude has the ability to give solutions on the highest levels [and] make players around him better. This is what he can do.”

Will Jadon Sancho win the Ballon d’Or?

Sancho registered a mesmeric tally of 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 appearances during his first spell at Borussia Dortmund, following his decision to leave Manchester City’s academy, however his form has tailed off massively since returning to England in 2021.

The now 25-year-old completed an €85 million move to Manchester United after a stellar stint at the Signal Iduna Park, but he failed to reproduce his Dortmund form and he soon fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag, before returning to the Bundesliga giants on loan.

Sancho was subsequently sent on loan to Chelsea last season, but Enzo Maresca’s side opted to pay a €6m penalty fee in order to cancel their agreement to sign him permanently in the summer.

After being placed in the ‘Bomb Squad’ following his return to Old Trafford, Sancho eventually joined Aston Villa on another loan deal on Transfer Deadline Day. He is yet to register a goal contribution in four appearances since his arrival.
