Rangers have an interest in a “world-leading” star who could become the first new signing of manager Danny Rohl – but the Glasgow club face some stiff competition to get a move over the line.

Rohl took charge of the Ibrox outfit on Monday and will need to make some dramatic changes if the club is to hit the heights expected of it in the months ahead. He inherits a mess, with the summer recruitment having almost wholly failed.

With a fresh injection of talent required, one name that Rangers are already being linked with is 19-year-old Nigeria U20 winger Sani Suleiman, TeamTalk reports.

Suleiman plays for Slovakian side AS Trencin and has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €675,000.

This, however, is based on the teenager being out of contract at the end of the season. While that is the case, Trencin are expected to trigger a two-year option in his deal, forcing his valuation higher.

Still, the quick and creative winger should be within Rangers’ budget.

The teenager is in the midst of a breakout season. In just seven games, he has produced two goals and three assists for his side, while at the U20 World Cup he was one of the Nigeria players to catch the eye.

On top of this, a report from the CIES Football Observatory recently ranked him as the most complete winger in the world under the age of 21, prompting transfer expert Rudy Galetti to describe him as a ‘world leader”.

Rangers have hurdles to clear to sign Suleiman

A transfer will not be straightforward for Rangers. For the first part, they will have to persuade the teenager that they offer him a better career path than clubs like Chelsea, Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen, who are also credited with an interest in the player.

There are also potential work permit issues. Suleiman does not yet qualify to be able to work in the UK and is not even eligible for an appeal, so it may be that Rangers have to play a waiting game with this talented youngster, meaning he is unlikely to be Rohl’s first new addition.
