Chelsea urged to STEAL €115m signing from Man Utd
Chelsea have been urged to hijack Manchester United’s proposed deal for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.
The Cameroon international was identified as Ruben Amorim’s dream midfield signing during the summer transfer window and Man Utd submitted several official bids in an attempt to secure his signature.
It’s understood that Baleba was open to completing an Old Trafford switch, despite their failure to qualify for Europe, but Brighton were unwilling to sanction a deal for a fee of less than €115 million (£100m) and the transfer ultimately failed to materialise.
Man Utd are expected to rekindle their interest next year, however the Red Devils are also keeping tabs on England duo Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton as they look to bolster the midfield options available to Amorim.
With Baleba potentially set to be on the market in 2026, former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Chelsea to sign yet another Brighton star next year.
“What a player, imagine him at Chelsea, imagine a midfield of Baleba, Caicedo and Fernandez, oh my god,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT (via The Chelsea Chronicle).
Carlos Baleba receives Brighton transfer message
Following speculation of a summer move to Man Utd, Baleba has endured a difficult start to the 2025-26 season and Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler delivered a brutal message to the Cameroon star ahead of their win over Newcastle United on Saturday evening.
“I think we’re getting to a time now where it's up to him, where he has to take responsibility as well. He can't change the noise around him, he's a player for Brighton.
“No matter what the rumours are, he will be a player for Brighton until [at least] the end of the season. But now he has to take responsibility. Now he has to make a step up and show personality, that's his next step in his personal development for sure.”
Hurzeler continued: “Like I said in the last weeks, there are waves in development, but you can only get out of it if you take ownership and if you take responsibility, there are some moments where nobody can help you.
“You have to be your own support, your own help. He has the best environment here he can get, he has great teammates who are there for him and support him.
“But now it's also up to the player that he steps up, that he shows personality and takes ownership of his development. That’s what I demand from him in the future.”
