Chelsea owners BlueCo were left delighted by Enzo Maresca’s dismissal in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool, one insider has revealed.

The Club World Cup winners snatched a late winner against the Premier League champions as Estevao slid in at the back post to secure a 2-1 victory, sending Stamford Bridge wild.

Maresca was no exception, and his exuberant run down the touchline to celebrate with his players resulted in him seeing a second yellow card from the referee. He had previously been cautioned for dissent after Chelsea had a penalty claim overlooked.

With the Italian being sent off, Chelsea have now seen red cards in their last four major fixtures. Robert Sanchez started the run when he was dismissed against Manchester United, while Trevoh Chalobah (Brighton) and Joao Pedro (Benfica) have also seen red in lately.

But while it was unseemly for the manager to be dismissed, BlueCo were actually delighted with what they saw from the former Leicester City boss.

Speaking to the Chelsea Chronicle, insider Graeme Bailey said: “Chelsea hierarchy, not that they aren’t taking red cards seriously, they were unfazed by Maresca’s red card.

“They love the passion, they love what it means to him and everything the club coming together.”

Remarkably, in the buildup to the victory over Liverpool, Maresca had been coming under pressure from Chelsea supporters, who had been unhappy with the nature of recent losses against Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Brighton.

Maresca reacts to red card

Maresca had previously reacted to his dismissal on social media, but the Chelsea boss notably said that he did not regret his actions.

Writing to fans, he said: “Winning at the last moment was a beautiful joy for all of us.

“It was a shame not to be present at the final whistle to celebrate with our wonderful fans. Now recovery focus and energy in what we can do better.”

Chelsea will travel to out-of-form Nottingham Forest on 18 October for their next Premier League outing as the season gathers pace before the next international break in November, with Maresca’s side set to play seven games in the space of 21 days.
