Barcelona 'set sights' on surprise Man Utd transfer
Barcelona have reportedly “set their sights” on completing the signing of Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez in 2026.
The Blaugrana are in the market for a new central defender following the sale of Inigo Martinez to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in August and Hansi Flick has earmarked the Argentina international as a top target.
That is according to Spanish publication Fichajes, who claim that Flick is a huge admirer of Martinez’s ability to start attacks from the back.
The ex-Ajax defender has two years remaining on his current contract at Man Utd and Barcelona are eager to finalise a deal next year amid their pursuit of a new left-footed centre-back.
Martinez has suffered multiple fitness issues over the past few years, including his current ACL injury, however Barcelona reportedly believe this will lower Man Utd’s asking price and they view him as a far cheaper alternative to Inter Milan superstar Alessandro Bastoni.
The Italy defender is regarded as Flick’s “great desire”, but his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €83 million and he would likely command a world record fee for a centre-back as Inter are desperate to retain his services.
As a result, Martinez has been identified as a key transfer target by the Blaugrana hierarchy.
Lisandro Martinez to Barcelona?
Martinez has racked up 91 first-team appearances for Man Utd since his arrival from Ajax in 2022, although he will face immense competition for places once he returns from injury.
Ruben Amorim has limited options in midfield, but his defensive roster is stacked, with Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Luka Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Noussair Mazraoui and Martinez all options to feature in his back three system.
As a result, it’s plausible to imagine that Man Utd would sanction a sale if they receive a suitable offer next summer.
