Man City transfer that will SHOCK Guardiola done 'soon'
Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva will become a Benfica player 'soon,' according to the club's head coach Bruno Lage and presidential candidate Joao Noronha Lopes.
It must have been a slightly odd summer for the Portugal international. Despite being out of contract next year, Silva was personally given the Man City captaincy by Pep Guardiola.
The Spanish tactician had previously always left the decision up to the players, but he actively took the reins this time around after a dire 2024/25 season.
This choice has now left Man City facing the prospect of losing their captain on a free transfer next summer. Silva has been linked with a departure from the Etihad for years, and the 31-year-old looks to finally be on the move in 2026.
However, unlike previous years when it was the likes of PSG and Barcelona vying for his signature, next summer will see Silva return to his native Lisbon to link up with boyhood club Benfica.
Benfica confident of Silva return
At least that is according to the club's head coach Bruno Lage, and presidential candidate Jorge Noronha Lopes, who have both spoken about Silva's seemingly impending arrival.
Noronha Lopes has made it one of his campaign promises to bring Silva back to the club next year and has even held talks with the player, which forced Lage to address the situation at a press conference on Thursday.
"Without getting into the political side of the issue, from what I know of him and his motivations, he will soon be a Benfica player, regardless of the president," Lage said diplomatically.
Now, Noronha Lopes has doubled down on his previous assertions, telling Record: "I have a specific contract to present to Bernardo Silva, and he's not just another player Benfica fans want.
"He symbolises mystique, dedication, and a huge love for Benfica. He's a Benfica fan like us, and what I want is for Bernardo to be able to win at Benfica as he has been winning abroad. If I'm president of Benfica, Bernardo will be a Benfica player.
"Bernardo wants to return to Benfica, and I want him to return. I want to create all the conditions for Benfica to be successful, and I want to have winners like Bernardo with me."
