Messi’s new Inter Miami deal is very close

Following reports coming out of the US that Lionel Messi is close to signing a new deal with Inter Miami, Romano has confirmed these claims and says it should happen soon.

“The new contract for Lionel Messi at Inter Miami is very, very, very close. He’s on the verge of signing a new contract. It’s not a done deal – there are a few details to be clarified. Whenever a player of the stature of Messi’s stature is signing a contract, they are always very complicated. The final green light from MLS is needed,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“But this is the destination. Messi is expected to announce his new contract very soon, and it will be a big celebration for Inter Miami. Being able to keep Messi is a big success for the club.”

Baleba’s poor form: Are Man Utd worried?

Romano has backed Manchester United target Carlos Baleba to bounce back from a poor run of form, which he attributes to the failed move to Old Trafford last month.

“The last performance of Carlos Baleba for Brighton against Tottenham was a poor performance. It wasn’t of the level of a player like Baleba,” Romano said. “After the game, the coach of Brighton, Fabian Hurzeler, was very honest. He said that when a young player like Baleba is linked to a team like Man Utd and the deal doesn’t happen, this can have an influence on his performance. It can have an impact.

“Baleba wanted to go to Man Utd. But he’s always been respectful with Brighton. He was keen on the move. Personal terms were never going to be an issue. The problem was only Brighton and Man Utd. Brighton might consider let him go in 2026 but in 2025 it was always a no. That situation effected the player.

“I’ve told you several times that Man Utd will keep a close eye on Baleba. He’s very much appreciated by Ruben Amorim.

“These performances are not at a Baleba level yet.”

Maguire backs Amorim at Man Utd

Sticking with Man Utd, Harry Maguire’s show of support for Ruben Amorim before Sunday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea was seen as important at Old Trafford.

“Maguire is still seen internally at Man Utd as a leader, as a very important player. But Amorim really appreciates the mentality of the player and what he’s trying to do for the young players at the club. That’s why his future is a big topic. He’s got a lot of respect internally and a very positive relationship with Amorim,” Romano explained.

Andre Onana: It’s over at Man Utd

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has sprung into form after being allowed to leave Man Utd for Trabzonspor, but it will take a remarkably turnaround for him to be welcomed back at Old Trafford, Romano says.

He explains: “Officially, Andre Onana will return to Man Utd next summer. My understanding is that Man Utd and Onana himself see his chapter at the club as almost closed. So it’s very difficult to imagine Onana restarting his Manchester United life.

“He was unhappy with the situation this summer and because United believe Senne Lammens will be the goalkeeper for present and future. So unless something exceptional happens, it’s over between Man Utd and Onana.”

Trent worries at Real Madrid?

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s unhappy start to life at Real Madrid after a €10 million move from Liverpool continues, with the right-back out injured at present. Romano says there are no long-term concerns, though.

“Real Madrid, I can guarantee, that they are happy with Trent, as a player and a professional. They’re happy with the decision they made in signing him,” he says. “Maybe the start was not unforgettable, and he’s also injured, but I can tell you that Real Madrid are not changing their mind on Trent. They love Trent and see him as a super important player at the club.”
