Everton complete €25m signing of long-term target
Everton are finalising the signing of Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl.
The 23-year-old former Germany youth international has been on the radar of the Toffees for some time, perennially being linked with a move to Merseyside over the past 12 or 18 months.
The attraction to Rohl is understandable. Though not an actual wizard as his name would suggest, the versatile midfielder has shown himself to be a hugely promising talent in the Bundesliga.
Despite his lanky build and slightly awkward movement, Rohl has good speed and excellent technical ability. He is also versatile, being able to play in every midfield role and even out on the wing.
Primarily an attacking midfielder, Rohl previously said that he prefers playing as a box-to-box No.8. He has now arrived on Merseyside to complete his move from Freiburg.
Everton sign Rohl
Sky Germany reports that Rohl will initially join Everton on loan, but that the deal will include an obligation to be made permanent next summer. The Toffees have agreed to pay €25m for the 23-year-old, which is a significant windfall for Freiburg.
It was always expected that Rohl would be sold on for a big profit sooner rather than later, but losing him will be damaging as the Bundesliga side have endured a difficult start to the season.
It remains to be seen if Rohl will be able to break into Everton's starting XI or if he will have to bide his time. Given his similarity to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has shown huge promise so far, he could initially struggle for minutes.
Rohl is set to become Everton's ninth signing of a busy summer rebuild under David Moyes and the new Friedkin owners. He will take their spending to over €150m, while only €4m has been made from sales.
