Chelsea have been told they must accelerate their pursuit of Fermin Lopez if they want to sign the Barcelona midfielder before the end of Transfer Deadline Day.

Fermin, 22, has emerged as a priority target for Enzo Maresca’s side following their failure to land RB Leipzig superstar Xavi Simons, although they are yet to finalise an agreement with Barcelona or the player.

As a result, a deal looks increasingly unlikely to happen unless Chelsea intensify talks to purchase the Spain international over the next few hours.

This has been confirmed by Mundo Deportivo, who report that Chelsea must act fast if they want to add Fermin to their first-team squad before the window shuts at 19:00 BST.

The Blues lodged a €40 million offer for the 22-year-old last week, however Barcelona will not consider a sale unless they receive a bid worth at least €70m as they currently have no intention of losing the midfielder this summer.

Fermin has only played 73 minutes out of a possible 270 in La Liga so far this season, but widespread reports claim that Hansi Flick remains a huge admirer of the Spaniard, while the player is still keen to stay at Camp Nou.

The Barcelona academy graduate has four years remaining on his current contract at the club and Chelsea will be required to make him their most expensive signing of the summer transfer window if they want to finalise a deal on Transfer Deadline Day.

What transfers will Chelsea make on Deadline Day?

Although a deal for Fermin appears unlikely as things stand, Chelsea are expected to complete the loan signing of Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Facundo Buonanotte before the window closes.

Meanwhile, the club remain in negotiations over the possible exits of Ben Chilwell, Axel Disasi, Raheem Sterling and David Datro Fofana.

Nicolas Jackson may also leave Stamford Bridge before the end of Deadline Day, although his proposed loan move to Bayern Munich has officially collapsed and he has been ordered to return to Chelsea.
