The Red Devils have already spent €153.2 million on the signings of Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford), Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and Diego Leon (Cerro Porteno) so far this summer, but Fernandes has urged the club to dip back into the market in search of reinforcements.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Man Utd are eager to sign a goalkeeper, a central midfielder and a centre forward, although the club are hamstrung by financial woes and they must sanction sales before adding to Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony are among the players expected to depart Old Trafford on permanent deals this summer, but Man Utd are yet to finalise their exits and this has impacted their ability in the market.

However, Fernandes has now issued a strong transfer message in an attempt to force INEOS to improve the squad available to Amorim.

Man Utd were held to a 2-2 draw against Everton in their final fixture of the Premier League Summer Series on Sunday and Fernandes was fairly despondent after the game.

“It’s improving, but it’s not where we want it to be,” he told reporters (via The Mirror). “It’s a game of football, there’s always passion there. Whatever happens, happens. There was nothing spicy there, it’s normal, it is part of the game.

“It’s been positive [the US tour] and it’s good to create a bond with the players. We looked a bit lazy today and we need to change that.

“I don’t want to have a dig at anyone, but I think the club is doing the best they can in terms of all the financial situations they talk about. I don’t know about it, I’m not involved in that. But obviously it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here.

Fernandes added: “We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more and to have more to do to get into the starting line-up. I think that’s what the club and the manager are trying to do and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.”

Man Utd have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks and they are currently focused on finalising a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who is also wanted by Newcastle United.
