Manchester United have sent RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko a formal contract offer amid growing confidence that he will join them, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The saga surrounding the Slovenia international has now entered its decisive hours, with Sesko expected to make a final decision on his next club shortly.

Newcastle made a €90 million bid to RB Leipzig on Monday, and Man Utd followed suit on Tuesday by submitting an offer worth €85m. Reports on the latter were accompanied by claims that the 22-year-old was increasingly favouring a move to Old Trafford.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the belief that Sesko will choose Man Utd has only grown stronger as the hours have passed, with the Red Devils now having presented a formal contract offer to the young striker.

Internally at Man Utd, the feeling is that Sesko has his heart set on a move to the Northwest rather than the Northeast, but the club are still awaiting his definitive decision.

Man Utd confident of Sesko deal

These reports will cause increasing consternation at Newcastle, who felt that they had a good chance of landing Sesko after their hefty offer on Monday. There have also been suggestions that the Slovenian had been left impressed by the Magpies' sporting and financial proposals.

However, missing out on key targets has been the story of Newcastle's window, and Sesko looks set to become the latest in a long list of names to have snubbed the Carabao Cup winners this summer.

Sesko already has a broad agreement in place with both Newcastle and Man Utd, but the fact that the latter have now entered the stage of formally discussing terms appears to suggest that the writing is on the wall for Eddie Howe and company.

Meanwhile, Man Utd also remain in discussions with RB Leipzig. The Red Bulls have not yet officially accepted the Old Trafford club's €85m offer, so more negotiations are required.
