EXCLUSIVE: Aston Villa fighting to secure Asensio return
Aston Villa are still fighting to sign Marco Asensio from PSG following a successful loan spell last season, FootballTransfers has learned in an exclusive update.
Asensio impressed during his six months at Villa Park, and while there has been no immediate agreement for the Spain international to return, the Birmingham club go into the closing stages of the transfer window still hopeful that something might be done.
Unai Emery’s side are set to benefit from the chaotic end to Jose Mourinho’s spell at Fenerbahce. Had the Turkish side qualified for the Champions League, a deal was in place for the 29-year-old to move to Istanbul, but their elimination in the playoff against Benfica has blocked the move.
Now transfer insider Duncan Castles has revealed on The Transfers Podcast powered by FootballTransfers that Ascencio remains high on the agenda at Villa.
He explains: “I understand the deal was in place for Asensio to join Fenerbahce if they qualified for the Champions League. Now there’s a good chance he’ll go back to Aston Villa.
“They’re working on a deal there. The complication is Asensio’s wage of €9m net and whether PSG will compensate part of that to allow the transfer to go through.”
PSG likely to sell
Asensio only has one year to run on his PSG deal, and with the Spaniard out of the picture under Luis Enrique, there is every chance the Ligue 1 side could be tempted into a deal.
Although the attacking midfielder has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €15m, the Champions League winners would likely accept a lesser offer given that they signed Asensio on a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2023.
Aston Villa’s desire to re-sign the player is understandable after he contributed eight goals and one assist in 21 appearances under Emery last season, although his form did dip once Marcus Rashford was injured.
