Eberechi Eze and five world-class footballers who support Arsenal
Eberechi Eze is poised to complete childhood dream by signing for Arsenal.
As FootballTransfers exclusively revealed, the Gunners have long had the framework of a deal completed but chose not to pursue the move until Kai Havertz was struck down by injury earlier this week.
For Eze, it has opened the door to an opportunity to fulfil a lifelong ambition to play with the Gunners.
The England attacker has regularly spoken about his love of Arsenal.
“I just supported them from when I was young, I played with them when I was younger, and they’re my favourite team,” Eze told journalist Alessandro Morolli-Schiavone in November 2018.
“When I was younger, Thierry Henry – I used to love Thierry Henry, and that’s why I decided to sign there when I was younger. To play for a club that you support, that’s what I wanted to do.
“Growing up with them, playing with them, I’ve grown a love for the team.”
While he never ruled out playing for Tottenham, rejecting them to sign for Mikel Arteta’s side will be doubly sweet for the 27-year-old.
What world-class footballers support Arsenal?
Eze is far from alone in being a top professional that loves Arsenal. Here are three other leading players who have gone public about their love of the club.
Morten Hjulmand
The Sporting CP midfielder has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer to hook up with Ruben Amorim, but in an ideal world, the Denmark destroyer would move to Arsenal.
Having been inspired by Patrick Vieira, he has the Arsenal crest tattooed on his left arm.
Ollie Watkins
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has admitted that it would be a “dream” to play for Arsenal.
The Gunners have recently had an interest in the England hitman and it would not be a total surprise to see him targeted again in the future.
“That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a long shot,” he told the Sports Gazette in 2020.
Tammy Abraham
Abraham might have made his name at Chelsea, but the striker grew up as an Arsenal fan.
In 2017, he told Eurosport (via Football.London): "To be honest I was an Arsenal fan. When you're young and you choose who to support, if it's a family thing, it's a family thing.
"Luckily for me, it was a family thing, so it wasn’t really a problem at Chelsea. Someone I looked up to was Thierry Henry. His variations of finishing, his movement, the way he dribbles. Someone like that has a key impact on me."
David Alaba
Real Madrid defender David Alaba has made no secret of his admiration for Arsenal.
“When you’ve been Arsenal fan as a kid you will be one your whole life in some way,” he told Bild in a 2019 interview.
Paul Pogba
Now on the books of Monaco are serving a ban for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, the World Cup winner previously told Manchester United’s official podcast that he used to support the Gunners.
“I will be honest. So, at the start, I was an Arsenal fan - obviously because of all the French players, you know,” he said. “I couldn't say anything so I used to love Henry and, because of him, I was an Arsenal fan. Then I changed and went on to choose with my other brother. No Arsenal, I went with the other one, the United fan!”
