Chelsea make transfer U-TURN on 'bomb squad' member
Chelsea may reportedly decide to keep Renato Veiga at the club this summer following Levi Colwill’s anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Veiga, 22, joined Chelsea from FC Basel last year, but he failed to establish himself as a regular in the Premier League and he pushed to leave the club during the January transfer window in order to play consistent football in his preferred position of centre-back.
The Portugal international impressed during a short-term loan spell at Juventus, however he was immediately placed in Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’ upon his return to west London this summer, while he was excluded from their squad for their triumphant Club World Cup campaign.
Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus have all been linked with a permanent move for Veiga over the past few weeks, while Chelsea have even offered him to Manchester United in an attempt to reduce the potential cost of Alejandro Garnacho.
However, the Blues could now opt to reintegrate Veiga back into the first-team fold.
That is according to talkSPORT, who claim that Colwill’s ACL injury may prompt Chelsea to retain the services of Veiga in order to provide additional centre-back depth.
Renato Veiga to stay at Chelsea?
Enzo Maresca has labelled signing a new central defender as a “priority” for the final two weeks of the transfer window, but the Chelsea hierarchy are reluctant to dip back into the market and they could decide to promote Veiga back into a prominent role instead.
The 22-year-old’s current contract at Stamford Bridge isn’t due to expire until 2031 and although reports speculate he is eager to leave the club after being left in the cold, an extended stay in west London could be on the cards.
However, Axel Disasi, a fellow member of Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’, appears destined to leave the club this summer, and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a surprise move in recent days.
