Chelsea transfer faces unexpected delay as flight POSTPONED
Chelsea forward Marc Guiu is expected to join Sunderland on loan for the duration of the 2025-26 season, but the transfer has hit an unexpected delay.
The Spain U19 international joined Chelsea from Barcelona for €6 million last summer, however he failed to usurp Nicolas Jackson as Enzo Maresca’s first-choice striker and he is set to be sent on loan in order to continue his development.
Guiu scored six goals in seven Europa Conference League matches last term, but he only made three Premier League appearances and his season was curtailed by a hamstring injury suffered in February.
The summer arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap have pushed Guiu even further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and he has agreed to join Sunderland on a season-long loan deal in order to gain valuable first-team experience.
The transfer has been formalised between both clubs, however Guiu is yet to travel to Sunderland, according to Keith Downie.
The Sky Sports reporter posted on Sunday: “Guiu’s flight was postponed today but doesn’t mean the deal is dead. Agreement still in place and an expectation that the striker will finalise his move to Sunderland on loan for the season.”
Sunderland already have Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda as striker options ahead of the new campaign, while they have recently been linked with a sensational move for RB Leipzig star Lois Openda.
However, Guiu remains the most likely candidate to bolster Regis Le Bris’ centre forward roster and his loan move to the Stadium of Light is still expected to go through.
Marc Guiu to leave Chelsea on loan
Guiu will become the 12th senior player to leave Chelsea this summer once his loan transfer to Sunderland is formally completed, and several more exits are also planned as the Blues aim to trim down the size of Maresca’s squad.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Christopher Nkunku, Tyrique George and Raheem Sterling are all set to be sold on permanent deals before the window slams shut on 1 September, while the aforementioned Jackson could depart too.
Axel Disasi, Ben Chilwell, Renato Veiga, Alfie Gilchrist, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, David Datro Fofana and Armando Broja are among the other players expected to leave Chelsea this summer.
