Isak 'on strike' at Newcastle as Liverpool transfer reaches breaking point
Alexander Isak is officially ‘on strike’ at Newcastle, with the striker set to miss his side’s Premier League opener at Aston Villa this weekend and receive a formal punishment.
Isak has not played for Newcastle during the pre-season after asking the club to explore a move to Liverpool and the 25-year-old has also not trained with his teammates upon their return from their pre-season tour, of which he was left out of.
With Liverpool having yet to return with a new offer after seeing their initial bid of around €120 million immediately rejected by Newcastle, Eddie Howe has left the door open for Isak to eventually return to the first team should things improve.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Isak could be disciplined by Newcastle for the first time if he misses their first competitive game of the campaign against Villa as the club continue to hold out over his future.
Newcastle are demanding £150m (€173m) for Isak and they will also not consider his departure until they can first sign a replacement – a situation that has had continued difficulties after seeing Benjamin Sesko reject the club to join Manchester United last week.
Isak’s agent, Vlado Lermic, is said to be advising his client to avoid showing ‘weakness’ in the hopes of getting his dream move to Liverpool but Newcastle are not expected to soften their stance in terms of asking price or needing a replacement if an agreement is to be reached.
Newcastle in talks to sign striker with Isak situation set to drag on
Newcastle have continued to hold talks over signing Yoane Wissa, who himself is refusing to play for Brentford, but the 28-year-old is seen as a replacement for the departed Callum Wilson as opposed to Isak, while the Magpies are also close to another major deal.
Wissa is ‘expected’ to join Newcastle despite the two clubs still yet to agree on a fee but, in the meantime, Anthony Gordon is set to deputise as up front against Villa.
Newcastle are still hopeful that Isak will eventually remain at St James’ Park and even sign a new contract with a release clause to leave next summer, even if it means the player remaining unavailable for selection for the remainder of the transfer window.
Much will also depend on Liverpool, who have not returned with a second bid for Isak and who have now turned their attention to defensive reinforcements, indicating that the saga could drag on until the deadline unless there is a significant change.
