New Olympique Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes has explained his decision to reject a return to the Premier League.

The England international recently completed a free transfer move to Ligue 1 giants Marseille after spending several successful years on the books at fellow French club Lille.

Gomes had moved to France after failing to establish himself at Man Utd, where he came through the academy and made his first-team debut under Jose Mourinho.

At Lille, Gomes became one of Ligue 1's best midfielders and was even handed his first senior England call-up under Lee Carsley last year. With his deal expiring this summer, he opted to leave the club and ultimately decided to join Marseille.

Before that, however, Gomes held talks with several Premier League clubs, including West Ham and Tottenham, while there were also persistent links with a return to Man Utd.

Gomes on Marseille move

Speaking at his first Marseille press conference, the midfielder has now explained his decision to reject a move back to the Premier League in favour of staying in France.

"It's true, I had offers in England too, but the decision wasn't easy. I played four seasons at Lille, so I knew OM. I spoke with the coach [Roberto de Zerbi], saw the objectives, and I was interested in the project," he said.

"Here, you always play under pressure, and that also played a role in my decision. I played for Manchester United, which is a big club. I know the atmosphere of big stadiums.

"Marseille is different, it's a different atmosphere. I love the supporters. People come together in the neighbourhoods. There's a unity around the club. It can be intimidating, but I find it positive.

Gomes also addressed his relationship with former Man Utd teammate Mason Greenwood. “I’ve spoken to Mason on the phone several times," the 24-year-old explained.

"He’s a bit like a little brother to me. We met when we were eight, when we played together at the youth level. Starting so young and ending up at a professional club together is rare and beautiful. I can’t wait to share these moments with him in Marseille.”
